Practical Shelving Ideas For Your Commercial Van Bodies

Commercial Van Bodies
July 18, 2019

There’s practically no limit to the things that can be transported within commercial van bodies. In addition to transporting cargo, people use vans for businesses such as carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, and more. But just stacking objects on top of one another, with no tiedowns or shelving, is a disaster waiting to happen. Not only can the items being shipped be damaged, but a shifting load can cause an accident.

There are lots of things to consider when shipping products inside of a van, truck, or trailer. The temperature of the environment in which they are being transported is one of those things. But as important as that is, shelving is equally as important. Let’s take a look at some racking/storage ideas to give you a better idea of how to securely transport items inside your van body.

Racks and Tiedowns

There are any number of rack styles available. The weight of what’s being shipped, its shape, and more can help determine which rack is appropriate. While items are on a rack, however, they must additionally be secured by straps, tiedowns, etc. The racks themselves should be mounted in some manner to the body of the van or truck doing the transporting. Not mounting the rack will cause it to tip over, slide, or shift during transportation.

Got Expensive Gear – Make a Locking Compartment

If you have expensive tools in your van, make or purchase a locking, heavy-duty compartment to keep them safe. It’s going to be a little bit of a nuisance if you use the equipment in there often, but it will certainly come in handy if a burglar breaks into your van.

In Addition to Shelving – Try Hanging

You’ll need less shelves and cabinetry if, from the doors and sides of your van, you hang as much as possible. Things that you can hang consist of saws, glues, tape rolls, pliers, screwdrivers, and more.

Consider a Workbench That Slides Out

A custom slide-out workbench will do far more than allow you somewhere to work indoors and out. It will provide another area for storage.

Do You Have Pipes?

Wait! Don’t throw those old, “useless,” short pieces of pipe away. These can be used for storing things. Into 4 to 5 inch pieces cut your 3 inch PVC pipes and attach them where they will be the handiest. Facing inwards, attach a simple stainless steel bracket. Anything round can be stored in these pipes – that means less clutter for your worktable drawers and fewer little items rolling around the inside of your van.

False Floor

Particularly if you transport plywood in large pieces, valuable storage space can be created by installing a false floor. Make sure that you ensure access by the side door and the rear door.
