What You Need To Know About Propane Transportation

Propane Transportation
August 06, 2020

Liquefied petroleum gas, often referred to as LPG, is also known as propane. This gas is typically liquefied and stored at ambient temperature. When cooled or compressed, it turns into a liquid state. From fueling fleets to private vehicles, heating businesses to residential homes, propane offers numerous uses in our daily lives. For that reason, propane transportation is necessary.

Transporting propane to residential communities and commercial businesses can be a hazardous task. If safety factors and strict regulations are taken into consideration and adhered to, the transportation process should flow smoothly. Let us take a closer look at the different methods of propane transportation.

Understanding Propane Transportation

When moving propane from one location to another, there are a number of transportation methods available. They can either be transported by local delivery trucks, transport trucks, tanker ships, or tank cars. Propane is transported under pressure, unlike pipeline-delivered natural gas. Approximately 11,000 gallons are held by a typical propane transport tank and an estimated 5000 gallons is held by most bobtails (semi-trucks). For homeowners who require propane for cooking and heating as well as local propane dealers who do not have tank car unloading access, logistic companies will use propane delivery trucks to transport propane to their location.

Propane Delivery Truck Pump Selections

Propane delivery trucks will use a variety of sliding vane pumps to transport propane. These pumps are mounted directly to the bottom of a tank.

  • A 4-inch ANSI flange inlet is typically used in propane transport.
  • A 3-inch ANSI flange inlet is typically used by bobtails. These pumps are mounted to the bottom of a tank.
  • A 2-inch NPT inlet can also be used by a bobtail. These are piped to the bottom of the tank while the pump is mounted on the truck’s chassis.

The latter of these pumps are driven by either a hydraulic motor which is directly mounted to the pump or by a PTO connection located near the engine of a truck. Often, a hydraulic pump system to drive the pump’s motor can be found mounted on the truck.

A piece of important equipment such as a meter can also be found fitted on the propane delivery trucks. The meter plays a part in reflecting the amount of gas being dispensed. This will allow truck owners to bill their clients efficiently.

Should You Use a Sliding Vane Pump?

There are many benefits of using a sliding vane pump. Here is a list of advantages.

  • These are the most long-lasting and durable methods of pumping propane backed by their patented thrust bearing design.
  • Due to its small compact package, tight spaces can be reached thanks to its hydraulic drive option.
  • Pumping performance is improved thanks to the self-adjusting vanes.
  • These pumps produce low noise and provide high pumping efficiency.
  • The internal relief valve is factory preset.
